How to Properly Clean and Maintain Your Tech EDC Backpack

Nothing gets the job done quite as good as your tech EDC backpack in hauling your daily gear—laptop, phone, DSLR camera, charging cables, and whatnot. Thanks to its thoughtful design and organization, plenty of storage, and durable materials.

You can pack it to the gills with all your gear. But here’s the thing: It also needs T-L-C!

Why? You know, sweat and oil from your skin, food bits in its pockets, grease spots, and other debris it collects over time can degrade its appearance and function.

So today, let me talk about tech EDC backpack maintenance to ensure your sweet backpack stays as tough as nails and is ready for anything (like your next travel).

Step 1: Empty and Inspect

First things first, empty out your backpack completely. Seriously, all of it! That stray granola bar wrapper, those pens you forgot about, and the random cable ties – everything needs to come out. I mean, every…single…thing.

Once you’ve emptied it, give it a shake to remove any crumbs or loose dirt. Now, take a moment to inspect the backpack. Look for any signs of wear and tear, such as frayed straps, loose stitching, or zippers that aren’t entirely zipping like they used to. Then, check the MOLLE system, PALS webbing, and other attachment points for damage.

This is the perfect time to catch and fix minor issues before they become significant problems later. Trust me, you don’t want any of that.

Step 2: Spot Clean

For those little spots and stains, you’ll need a gentle touch. Grab a cloth or a soft brush and some mild detergent (like Dawn dish soap).

Mix the detergent with some water – we’re talking just a few drops in a water bowl – and gently scrub the stained areas. Ripstop nylon and other durable materials are tough, but you don’t want to scrub like you’re trying to remove rust from a bike (or a bad breakup memory).

Again, gentle, dude. If you’ve got a particularly stubborn spot, it’s time for a leveled-up solution!

Use a bit of that good ‘ol vinegar, and then mix it with water. Vinegar and water solution works wonders for cutting through grime without damaging your bag’s material. Just be sure to rinse the area thoroughly with water afterward to avoid any lingering vinegar smell. You don’t want your tech smelling like salad dressing.

Step 3: Deep Clean

Sometimes, spot cleaning isn’t enough, and you’ve got to do a full-on deep clean. This is especially true if you’ve been using your backpack in harsher conditions, like during travel or outdoor adventures (Mt. Everest climb? Why not?)

Let me discuss the process right here.

  1. Remove Detachable Parts: Take off any removable parts like pouches, straps, or the CCW compartment if it’s designed to be taken out. Wash these separately.
  2. Soak and Wash: Fill your bathtub or a large basin with lukewarm water and add a mild detergent. Submerge the backpack and let it soak for about 15-20 minutes. Use a soft brush to scrub the entire bag, particularly the high-contact areas like the back panel and shoulder straps.
  3. Rinse Thoroughly: After scrubbing, drain the soapy water and refill with clean water. Rinse the backpack thoroughly to ensure all soap is removed.

Did you know? Any soap residue left behind can attract dirt and degrade the fabric over time. So, let me restate this.. rinse the tech EDC backpack thoroughly and ensure no soap is left behind.

  1. Dry Properly: The more challenging parts are over. Now, for the easier. Dry it completely. But never, and I mean NEVER, put your tech EDC backpack in the dryer.

You must know and remember. The heat can warp or damage the materials and hardware. So, the wiser thing to do….hang it up to air dry in a well-ventilated area but out of direct sunlight.

Did you know? sunlight can fade colors and weaken the fabrics? So, keep your pack out of direct exposure when drying.  Lastly, open all the compartments and pockets to ensure it dries completely.

For odor removal

Empty and shake out debris from your pack. Then, mix equal parts of white vinegar and water.  Dampen a small piece of cloth with the solution, then wipe down the pack’s interior and exterior.

Stubborn odor? Use baking soda. Sprinkle some of it inside the bag. Allow it to sit overnight, then shake it out the following morning. Alternatively, hang your backpack outside to naturally eliminate any odor.

Does the smell still linger? Machine wash your backpack on a gentle cycle. NOTE: Check any manufacturer instructions. If allowed, use a mild detergent and rinse thoroughly. Easy, right? Avoid mildew buildup. Before use, dry your tech EDC backpack completely.

Step 4: Maintenance Tips

Now that your backpack is clean, let’s keep it that way with some regular maintenance. Here are my tips.

  • Regularly Empty and Shake Out: Make it a habit to empty and shake out your backpack every couple of weeks. It’s amazing how much stuff can accumulate in those little nooks and crannies – that you might not notice.
  • Check Zippers and Buckles: Give all the zippers and buckles a quick check regularly. If you notice any sticking, use a bit of zipper lubricant or wax. For buckles, make sure they’re not cracked or loose.
  • Reinforce Stitching: If you notice any loose threads or seams starting to give, reinforce them with some stitching before they become bigger issues. I mean, a bit of preventive care can extend the life of your bag significantly. Agree?
  • Waterproofing: If your bag isn’t already waterproof, consider using a fabric protectant spray. I use this often. This can help repel water and keep your gear dry, which is especially important for those unexpected downpours.
  • Avoid Overloading: I know, I know, sometimes you just need to carry a little extra. But regularly overloading your backpack can strain the zippers, seams, and straps, leading to premature wear. Try to stick to a manageable load to maintain the backpack’s integrity.

Conclusion

Your tech EDC backpack is more than just a bag – it’s a trusty sidekick that helps you carry your essentials in style and comfort.

By giving it the care and attention it deserves, you ensure it stays durable, functional, and ready for all your adventures.
