GORUCK GR1 Heritage

GORUCK GR1 Heritage Review: The Ultimate Waxed Canvas Backpack for EDC and Beyond

Few backpacks can marry the rugged durability of a special forces’ Bergen and the timeless aesthetics of a classic urban EDC carrier the way GORUCK GR1 Heritage can.

Don’t get me wrong. I love my current conquer-all backpack, which has been my trusty companion on my weekend adventures. But when I saw the GR1 Heritage, I knew I had to have it!!

Is the GR1 Heritage the ultimate waxed canvas rucksack, many experts say it is? Let’s find out in this honest-to-goodness review.

Aesthetics and Design

GORUCK GR1 Heritage

I love the GR1 Heritage’s practical design, like GORUCK understands the travails of daily commuters lugging their EDCs, wondering if their backpacks are trustworthy enough to take their adventures to the wilderness.

You have got to love its waxed canvas material, giving the GR1 Heritage an uncanny yet remarkably welcome vintage and durable look. That’s practicality and aesthetics in a perfect marriage!

I appreciate the clean lines and subdued branding, unlike some backpacks with logos and emblems on every square inch of the bag. It doesn’t scream for attention (just the way I want it!). That makes this EDC backpack a truly versatile wonder, perfect for outdoor adventures and urban settings.

Build Quality

GORUCK GR1 Heritage

I had my first GORUCK “go-bag” in 2010, and it remains my go-to companion bag when my outdoor adventurer’s “itch” starts kicking up. Thanks to its Special Forces medical ruck-inspired construction and build quality, it’s still here.

That’s precisely my sentiment about the GR1 Heritage. Its waxed canvas exterior is like a turtle’s waterproof shell but with the added advantage of aging more gracefully, like wine.

Heavy stitching joins panels like glue, while premium YKK zippers are tough as nails. You can get many years (if not decades) from this back-worn rucksack.

The solid handles and leather accents give the GR1 Heritage a touch of sophistication while boosting its durability.

Functionality

GORUCK GR1 Heritage

GORUCK designed the GR1 Heritage with utmost practicality in mind, excelling in everyday carry and beyond.  Its padded laptop compartment is strategically designed close to the user’s back for balance and protection.

It also features an additional fabric layer to protect your device and MOLLE webbing for modular attachments and customization.

You can use this EDC backpack for work, travel, and outdoor adventures. It’s that versatile!

Comfort

GORUCK GR1 Heritage

You will never feel the weight on your shoulders, regardless of how long the commute or hike is. It has a well-thought-out structured frame sheet that surprisingly distributes weight more effectively than my other EDC backpacks.

As expected, the shoulder straps have a firm yet comfy cushion. More importantly, to my delight, it’s contoured, allowing the straps to fit snuggling over my shoulders without digging into the skin underneath my clothes.

Organization and Access

GORUCK GR1 Heritage

I’m impressed with this bag’s well-thought-out organizational layout, including a clamshell opening that makes it super easy to dive into its main compartment.

You could retrieve your laptop, books, folders, tech pouch, gear, and other items without scratching your head.

My favorite? The bombproof laptop compartment! It has extra reinforcement to create a bunker-like shell for my gaming rig, ready to slug it out with other gamers whenever I like. The false bottom offers a sense of security, too!

There’s a quick stash pocket, too, right under the grab handle, perfect for stowing my sunglasses and other tiny essentials.

I’m glad GORUCK didn’t over compartmentalize the GR1 Heritage. At least you can customize it to suit your storage requirements.

Space and Access

GORUCK GR1 Heritage

I reviewed and own the 26-liter version, although you can pick the heftier 21-liter GR1 Heritage. Regardless of size, this EDC rucksack has enough storage space for a day’s essentials or even light travel.

I like its minimalist design, which maximizes its internal capacity without adding unnecessary bulk. I could squeeze in as many items as possible while ensuring effortless access.

For instance, my 14-inch MacBook Pro M4 fits perfectly in the laptop bunker, while the main compartment can accommodate a few clothes (even a jacket), tech pouch, personal items, and small gear.

Unique Features

You might think a backpack is a backpack regardless of brand. So, why the fuss with GR1 Heritage? Well, here’s why.

  • Waxed canvas material

It’s like adding a layer of water-impregnable oil on your backpack’s outer skin while giving it a sheen that gives the GR1 Heritage a unique leather-like appeal.

I like canvas better than nylon because it resists abrasions and tearing (Yup! I do get into “sticky” situations sometimes.), making it more durable.

  • Built-in MOLLE webbing

I wasn’t surprised about this feature, knowing GORUCK’s founder is a former US Special Forces operator. The MOLLE webbing is perfect for adding compatible accessories, turning the GR1 Heritage into a backpack ready for any adventure.

Besides customization, the MOLLE webbing’s exceptional modularity complements the rucksack’s minimalist design. This is the perfect spot to attach a light or some handy Heroclips.

  • TSA-compliant

Complying with TSA’s rules regarding carry-on bag sizes won’t be an issue with the GR1 Heritage.

Passing through airport security should be a breeze. After all, I’m not a fan of arguing with TSA officials about whether my bag meets specifications.

Brand

GORUCK GR1 Heritage

GORUCK’s origin is a beautiful love story, underscoring a husband’s dedication to his wife, who happens to be a Cote d’Ivore-posted US diplomat. Anxious for the latter’s safety, the ex-US Special Forces member husband commissioned a freelancer to design a “go-bag.”

You just have to love such a story! In 2008, that prototype “go-bag” formed the foundation for GORUCK, and this company has never looked back.

The GR1 Heritage has all the makings of a tough-as-nail, military-grade rucksack and is covered by GORUCK’s Scars Lifetime Guarantee.

That speaks volumes about the brand’s quality. The company believes in its products’ craftsmanship and high-quality materials, so it won’t mind fixing or replacing yours if it’s broken for FREE! Impressive!

Value

GORUCK GR1 Heritage

I understand why GORUCK placed a hefty price tag on its GR1 Heritage EDC backpack. Sure, it’s expensive, at around $400 for the 21L, but just look at what you’re getting!

It’s a durable, functional, and stylish piece of gear that could be the last EDC backpack you will ever buy.

The GR1 Heritage offers exceptional value to folks who demand reliability, durability, and aesthetic appeal from an EDC backpack that doubles as a work, travel, and adventure rucksack.

Final Thoughts

GORUCK GR1 Heritage

The GORUCK GR1 Heritage isn’t your ordinary backpack. It’s a statement of timeless design, thoughtful functionality, and bunker-like durability. You could be a traveler, a daily commuter, or a Bear Grylls-like outdoor enthusiast, and the GR1 Heritage will always have your back. Without a shadow of a doubt (at least for me), the GR1 Heritage is a top contender for the best EDC solution.
